North Philadelphia Schools Collaborate to Combat Gun Violence

Gesu School, Girard College, and St. Joseph’s Preparatory School sponsored a gun buyback event on October 29.
Guns were collected by the Philadelphia Police Department.
 

Three historic schools in North Philadelphia have formed a new partnership to develop programming and enact change amidst the ongoing gun violence epidemic that is gripping Philadelphia and the nation. Leadership at Girard College, St. Joseph’s Preparatory School, and Gesu School have pledged to combine efforts and resources to create safer communities for their students and neighbors.

 

Gesu School and St. Joseph’s Prep Announce Howley Scholars Program

The Howley Foundation is partnering with Gesu School and St. Joseph’s Prep to create groundbreaking opportunities for continued access to Catholic education in North Philadelphia. Gesu School and the Prep have shared the same Catholic, Jesuit mission over several decades, a mission that directly aligns with that of the Howley Foundation.

Congratulations to the Gesu School Class of 2022! We are proud of all that these students have accomplished, and especially their grit and heart. These confident, compassionate, and talented students bring us hope for the future. The Class of 2022 will attend the top high schools listed below.

Special thanks to commencement speaker Dr. Ala Stanford for sharing her story and inspiring our students to achieve their greatness: “When I see you, I see promise, possibility, change, and better days.” Dr. Stanford is a Top 10 CNN Hero and Region 3 Director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services overseeing Children Youth and Families, Federally Qualified Health Centers, Office of Disabilities and Early Childhood Education.

Gesu President and CEO Honored

On February 12, Gesu President and CEO Bryan Carter was honored with the Trailblazer Award from Saint Ignatius Cleveland. The award is presented to Saint Ignatius alumni of color who have made history, forging new ground as innovators and pioneers, both at Saint Ignatius and beyond.

Gesu sets a One Day Challenge Record!

 Thanks to more than 800 donors, Gesu exceeded our One Day Challenge goals and set a new record! Our community is filled with gratitude.

Gesu raised more than $108,000!
Students donated $910.00 with their “change for change” initiative.

Gesu Gospel Choir to Perform Christmas Concert December 16, 2021 in the Church of the Gesu

A beloved Gesu tradition returns! Join us to hear the beautiful voices of the Gesu Gospel Choir and to share Christmas joy. As our gift to the community, Gesu School presents our annual Christmas concert in the Church of the Gesu on Thursday, December 16, 2021. All are welcome!

For our community’s safety, all guests will be required to show proof of vaccination (except under age 12). Masks will be required at all times in the Church of the Gesu. A recording will be available for those unable to attend in person.

You are invited to Gesu’s Virtual 24th Symposium: Working Together to Manage Pandemic Stress in Our School Communities. Speakers Marsha Richardson, Psy.D., Clinical Psychologist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania, and Jabari Whitehead, Ed.D., Principal of Chatham Park Elementary School and Adjunct Professor at Saint Joseph’s University, will dialogue on this critical, timely topic. Participant Q&A will follow.

The educational landscape has shifted dramatically. Students and educators have returned to in-person classrooms and structured learning time after months of remote instruction and social and emotional upheaval. Join us for a virtual discussion with practical, actionable strategies on managing stress in school communities and strengthening our communities for the months ahead.
