Grade Two Teacher, Mary Ryder, Receives the “JIMMY” Medal at SpeakUp! Event at Gesu School.

Congratulations to Mary Ryder, Grade Two Teacher at Gesu, who received the “JIMMY” Medal from the SpeakUp! organization on April 9, 2015! The “JIMMY” Medal is awarded to individuals who exhibit resiliency, empathy, humility, and loyalty, and who make a difference in others’ lives by recognizing their goodness and potential. We applaud Mrs. Ryder for her commitment to Gesu’s students and her role as faculty coordinator for Gesu’s 2014 and 2015 SpeakUp! events. SpeakUp! promotes open communication among youth, educators, and parents on critical topics facing adolescents today.

On receiving the award, Mrs. Ryder comments, “I was just stunned. I was humbled by the support. To be given this for something I love doing so much is such a gift. I love my job.” She has taught at Gesu School since 2011.

Gesu friend, advocate, and 2014 Gesu Spirit Medal recipient, Elizabeth R. Moran, initiated the “JIMMY” Medal program to honor her son’s memory and to celebrate those who demonstrate the special qualities that he embodied. Each honoree receives two medals—one to keep and one to share with another extraordinary individual.

The “JIMMY” Medal has an enduring legacy at Gesu School. In the recent past, six Gesu students and leaders received the “JIMMY” Medal, and each passed it on to another member of the Gesu community. The 2015 “JIMMY” Medal, presented at the Gesu SpeakUp! event, was passed on to Mary Ryder from Angela Keeler, former Grade 7 Teacher at Gesu School, who received the "JIMMY" Medal in 2011.
