Highlights from Catholic Schools Week 2018!

Brimming with unique activities, prayer, and service, the Gesu community celebrated Catholic Schools Week from January 23-February 3. Catch a glimpse of these special days and how Gesu embraced this year’s theme from the National Catholic Educational Association: “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” Gesu School is proud of our Catholic identity as a Jesuit and IHM school that educates the whole child—from academics to character development.

During Catholic Schools Week, Gesu School students celebrate the community by donating more than 500 packaged food items to the Nutritional Development Services (NDS) Community Food Program. We are proud of them for being young “men and women for others." Thanks to student council for collecting and organizing all of the donations.

Throughout Catholic Schools Week, Gesu students raised $1,235.10 for Mission Mania! Funds will support Catholic Relief Services for aid to Puerto Rico. Congratulations to the 7th grade girls class, who led the way in fundraising! Thanks to our incredibly talented Art Teacher, Linda Hartzell for creating this special mural to commemorate Catholic Schools Week 2018.

On “Celebrate Students Day,” Gesu students spend time with their prayer-partner class to enjoy fun activities. Sixth graders helped our 2nd graders work on their reading skills and had fun enjoying their books. Our Pre-K students decorated special hats, made valentines from recycled paper, and read books with their 4th grade buddies.

The 4th grade planned a beautiful Catholic Schools Week liturgy, and our Chaplain, Fr. Neil Ver’Schneider, S.J., shared with students, “What we say and what we do is how we praise our God. You have to respond to the gifts God gives you.”

Gesu students wrote letters to members of the military to thank them for their service and offer them support.

Gesu’s annual Catholic Schools Week students vs. faculty/staff basketball game came down to the wire! Congratulations to The Pink Slips, our faculty/staff team, who won 57-56 at the buzzer. Congratulations to both teams on a fantastic game and solid sportsmanship! Thank you to our Gesu cheerleaders for generating so much school spirit, to Sr. Ellen for coaching the students, to Coach Deal for being the referee, and to our neighbors at St. Joseph’s Prep for inviting us to use their court.

For Teacher Appreciation Day, the Gesu team enjoyed a special luncheon and spent time together as a community. We are grateful for all Gesu teachers and staff for their dedication to making a difference in children’s lives and for their hard work each day.
